Is chocolate dangerous for dogs and cats?

Chocolate, although a treat much loved by humans, poses a real danger to dogs and cats. This is because the cacao beans used to make chocolate contain a substance called theobromine. This is an alkaloid similar to caffeine. While it is harmless to humans, it poses a danger to dogs and cats because their bodies eliminate it much more slowly. This slow elimination of theobromine leads to a toxic buildup in their bodies, even after ingesting just a small amount of chocolate.

Symptoms of chocolate poisoning in animals can appear a few hours after ingestion. They vary depending on the amount of chocolate ingested, the animal’s weight, and the cocoa content. The most common symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, excessive agitation, muscle tremors, a rapid heart rate (tachycardia), seizures, and even coma. In the most severe cases, this poisoning can be fatal, especially if the animal does not receive prompt medical attention.

It’s important to know that the more cocoa chocolate contains, the more toxic it is. White chocolate, on the other hand, contains very little theobromine, but it’s still not recommended for other reasons (fat, sugar, etc.).

If you think your dog or cat has eaten chocolate—even a small amount—it is essential to see a veterinarian immediately. Do not try to make your pet vomit without medical advice. Prompt action can save your pet’s life.
